Dewey Beach Liquors 5K attracts 290 Sunday morning runners

Will Rehrig wins in 16:06; two course records broken

A total of 290 runners from 17 states competed in the Dewey Beach Liquors 5K July 8, with Will Rehrig, a 25-year-old teacher from St. Andrew’s, crushing the field in 16:06.

Rehrig was joined on the leaderboard by Matt Wagoner, 16:26; Randy Doak, 17:03; Martin Rodriguez, 17:33; and Chad Lenox, 18:31.

Leah-Kate Lounsbury, 31, of Newark, was the overall women’s winner in 19:07. The girl with two first names was joined on the leaderboard by Maria Matkoski, 21:01; Hannah Perkins, 22:37; Michelle Simon, 22:51; and Mardiny Ung, 22:57.

Wagoner, 41, was second overall and first male masters runner, while Ung, 51, was the overall masters champion among women. Wagoner also broke the course record for masters runners with his time of 16:26, beating Mike Wardian’s mark of 16:33.

Outside Austin City Limits, Dewey welcomed Lance Tobey, 15, 18:54; Ned Tobey, 47, 19:36; and Allison Tobey, 42, 23:57. All are from Austin, Texas.

Rick Poppleton, 65, the rubberband man of roadrunners, set an age-group course record of 22:01, beating the 22:26 mark set by Doug White.

Notable locals: Amanda Ritter, 26, won the 25-29 age group in 23:07. Linda Schwartz-Chi, 53, was third in the 50-54 age group in 25:54. Angela Swarm, 56, of Dewey won her age group in 27:00. Connie Marshall, 60, of Dewey Beach placed second in her age group by walking the distance in 36:41. Mary Andrisani, 66, placed first in the 65-69 age group in 30:53. Joann Szczepkowski, 72, continued to dominate the 70-74 age group in 26:32. Chris Stanley, 49, the UPS man from Fruitland, Md., placed second in the 45-49 age group in 19:48. Bill Farquhar, 50, from Newark won the 50-54 age group in 18:41. Duane Christy, 55, won the 55-59 group in 21:53. Robert Fitzgerald, 63, of Millsboro won the 60-64 group in 22:28. Jack Vassalotti, 66, placed third in the 65-69 group in 28:41. Jules Woodall, 70, won his new age group in 26:10. Paul Kiefer, 77, an out-of-town local, won the 75-79 group in 47:06.

The next Races2Run local race is the Dewey Beach Patrol 10K/5K Saturday, July 21, on Dagsworthy Avenue in Dewey.
