Don Flood obsessed with President Trump

November 12, 2019

My daughter once noted that Mexican food was all the same.  Rice and beans accompanied with some type of protein.  Don Flood’s letters are much like Mexican food.  A topic (protein) accompanied by a healthy dose of ranting against Trump (his version of rice and beans).

January 2017: Affordable Care Act, and Trump

October 2017: NFL players, and Trump

August 2018: Japanese internment, and Trump

October 2019:  Immigration, and Trump

It’s going to rain today and, were Mr. Flood a weatherman, it would no doubt be Trump’s fault.  Trump would be Mr. Flood’s version of El Niño.

There is no question that the U.S. has looked to Latin America for labor and, given U.S. birth rates and the need to grow economically, will continue to do so.  After all, population growth is a key economic driver.  However, at least since Clinton, who was president when NAFTA was passed, every U.S. president has taken the position that we are a nation of laws that need to be followed, and that there are laws surrounding immigration.  There is a video of President Obama clearly stating that position. In his very unnerving way, all President Trump is saying is that we need to obey, or change, the law.

There is also no question that the mass movement to our southern border is not only organized, it is significantly larger than anything faced by any prior president.  Obama’s former administrators have been on the air saying as much.  The “invasion” derided by Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer last winter is now accepted as fact.

But there is also no question that U.S. economic policy drained the U.S. economy in favor of other countries.  For instance. today there is little or no clothing or furniture manufacturing in the U.S.  Steel, a mainstay of several major U.S. cities, and the employer for hundreds of thousands, moved offshore.  In other words, we sacrificed U.S. citizens for those elsewhere.  President Trump wants to reverse that.

I am not a fan of Mr. Trump’s communication style.  But I do recognize that the “animal spirits” that drive the U.S. economy react favorably to the core message he is sending.  The “true” economy isn’t the stock market, it’s the employment picture.  And unemployment is very low for the country as a whole and at historic lows for blacks.  Why?  A federal focus on U.S. jobs combined with the animal spirits of the economy.

Given all of this, I wish Mr. Flood would show as much concern for his countrymen as he does for those from somewhere else.

It will be interesting to read his letters if Elizabeth Warren, who wants to gut the credit card industry and a major Delaware employer, gets the nod to run against Trump.  Will Mr. Flood’s Trump obsession outweigh his neighbor’s need for a job?  Only time will tell.
