Donald W. Shehan, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. Born Dec. 13, 1938, to Russell and Bertha (Roher) Shehan in Three Springs, Pa., Donald lived a life defined by his devotion to his family, his country and the values he upheld with quiet strength.
For 67 years, Donald was the beloved husband of Gwendolyn Mae Shehan (née Cornelius), with whom he shared a lifetime of partnership, love and unwavering commitment. He was a proud and caring father to his daughters, Julie Griffith (deceased) and Donna Batten (Kevin), and to his son, Daniel Shehan, who brought him great joy throughout his life.
Donald served his nation with honor, beginning with 27 years in the Air National Guard before continuing his military career with seven years in the Army National Guard, from which he retired in 1991. His years of service reflected his deep sense of duty and steadfast character.
He cherished his time at his cabin in Pogue, Pa., where he found peace in the mountains and the fresh air. After retiring and moving to Rehoboth Beach, he devoted himself to Lighthouse Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a deacon.
Donald is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda Fesel (Rod), Christopher Hocking (Crystal), Jeremy Griffith, Kiaya Shehan and Dylan Batten; and three great‑grandchildren, Reagan and Rowen Fesel, and Sadie Hocking.
Don was deeply loved by his Grands and Greats. Being a "Pappy" was one of his greatest blessings.
Funeral services will be held with visitation for family and friends beginning at noon, Saturday, May 23, at Lighthouse Baptist Church, 21265 John J. Williams Hwy., Lewes, with the funeral service to follow at 1 p.m.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Delaware Hospice Center for their compassionate care.
