Dorian expected to pass Delaware in time for nice weekend

National Weather Service calls for rain, wind on Friday
September 5, 2019

For the southeast portion of the country, Hurricane Dorian made excruciatingly slow progress north this past week. However, it appears Delaware will be spared the full brunt of its power.

According to information Sept. 5 from the National Weather Service, Delaware will see the effects of Hurricane Dorian in the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 6. The federal service issued a tropical storm warning north to Fenwick Island. A warning of that nature means tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area within 36 hours.

The NWS said the center of the hurricane is expected to pass well offshore Friday. Dangerous surf and rip currents along with strong winds are anticipated, and some coastal flooding and beach erosion is possible, said a hazardous weather report issued Sept. 5.

As it’s done all week, the National Weather Service is calling for a nice weekend. During the day Saturday, Sept. 7, it’s called for mostly sunny skies, a high near 78 and a northwest wind at 10 to 15 mph. There’s a forecast of 66 degrees Saturday night. For Sunday, the forecast has temperatures in the upper 70s during the day and mid-60s at night.

Stay alert for big weekend events

Beginning Friday, Sept. 6, with Cole Swindell at Hudson Fields off Route 1 in Milton, there are a number of big events planned for the upcoming weekend.

As of press deadline Sept. 5, none of the following events has been cancelled: Swindell, Nanticoke Indian Tribe’s 42nd Annual Powwow, Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce’s 41st annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival, Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce’s 40th annual Sandcastle Contest.

The powwow, arts festival and sandcastle contest were all cancelled last year because of the weather.

Nanticoke Indian Tribe Chief Natosha Carmine said Sept. 5 they’re praying the weather conditions are not an issue. The tribe’s Facebook page had a message for Hurricane Dorian, saying, “They are not welcomed to the Powwow.”

Carmine said to monitor the tribe’s Facebook page for the most up-to-date information.

Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce Events Coordinator Emily Grothey said they’re keeping an eye on the weather, but it was too early to make a decision. If a cancellation is warranted, she said, a decision will be made by 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7.

Any weather-related updates will be posted to the chamber’s Facebook and Instagram pages, and a recording will be set on the phones. There is no rain date for the sandcastle contest. The chamber’s phone number is 302-227-6446.
