Douglas Edward Read, never met a stranger

June 4, 2019

Douglas Edward Read, 62, of Palm Beach, Fla., passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019, in Rehoboth Beach.

Born in California in September 1956, Doug spent his childhood in San Diego, Mississippi and Syracuse, N.Y.  He received a bachelor of science in industrial engineering from the State University of New York at Oswego in 1978 and a master’s of science in organizational management from the University of Maryland, Towson, Md., in 1992.

He had an interesting and varied career, including as a teacher and designer of products for Black and Decker Inc. After moving to Washington, D.C., he spent almost 20 years as a lobbyist for organizations such as The American Petroleum Institute, Society of Automotive Engineers, The National Electrical Manufacturers Association and The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers.  By far his most rewarding career was his volunteer work in retirement as a “junior cashier” at The Church Mouse Thrift Store in Palm Beach and the All Saints’ Episcopal Thrift Store in Rehoboth Beach.

Doug is survived by Wayne Wenzel, his husband and partner of 25 years; his mother, Marilyn Munger of Syracuse; two brothers, James Read and Larry Munger; nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Doug was the life of the party, the center of attention and never met a stranger. He will be missed by his many friends in Washington, Rehoboth and Palm Beach.

Services will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963, the Cancer Support Community Delaware, 18947 John J Williams Hwy., Suite 312, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, or to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 415 Crossways Park Drive, Suite DE, Woodbury, NY 11797.
