Downtown Milford Inc. retains national Main Street accreditation

July 11, 2020

Downtown Milford Inc. has been designated as an accredited Main Street America program for 2020, its 12th consecutive year.

Accredited status is Main Street America’s top tier of recognition and signifies a demonstrated commitment to comprehensive commercial district revitalization and proven track record of successfully applying the Main Street approach.

“We are proud to recognize this year’s 860 nationally accredited Main Street America programs that have dedicated themselves to strengthening their communities,” said Patrice Frey, president and CEO of the National Main Street Center. “These programs have proven to be powerful engines for revitalization by sparking impressive economic returns and preserving the character of their communities. During these challenging times, these Main Street programs will be key to bringing economic vitality back to commercial districts and improving quality of life during the recovery process.”

In 2019 alone, $6.45 billion of public and private reinvestment was generated, 6,466 net new businesses were opened, 32,316 net new were jobs created, and 10,412 buildings were rehabilitated in Main Street America communities.

DMI’s performance is evaluated by the Delaware Division of Small Business, which works in partnership with Main Street America to identify the local programs that meet 10 rigorous performance standards. Evaluation criteria determine the communities that are building comprehensive, sustainable revitalization efforts; they include standards such as fostering strong public-private partnerships, documenting programmatic progress, and actively preserving historic buildings.

In 2019, Downtown Milford Inc. was supported by more than 4,100 volunteer hours. DMI is responsible for hosting the Riverwalk Farmers Market, Holiday Stroll, Santa House, Bug and Bud Festival, and Ladybug Music Festival, to name a few. “Our goal is to be an economic driver in the downtown by increasing foot traffic, beautifying downtown, and creating a fun and friendly atmosphere. This is done by our many events, urban art, flower planting and façade grants,” said Trish Gerken, DMI executive director. “We are proud to receive the Main Street accreditation for our 12th consecutive year. We will continue to support our local merchants and make Milford a place you want to live, work and play!”

Downtown Milford Inc is always looking for volunteers and contributors. For more information, email Trish Gerken at director@downtownmilford.org.
