Dr. MLK Jr. Celebration Organization says thanks

February 18, 2021

On behalf of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization, Sussex County, we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who helped make the 29th Annual Commemorative Weekend Celebration a success!

Together, as a community, we honored and paid tribute to the life and legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Our theme this year, “Enough is Enough: Drive Out Hate with Love,” reminded us of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and the famous quote from Dr. King, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

While our events were scaled back this year due to the pandemic, we were able to continue our tradition of a Worship Service Jan. 18.  We are grateful to the more than 140 people who attended the virtual service.  Thank you to the Rev. Doctor Deborah A. McCaffity, pastor of St. George AME Church of Lewes, for her stirring message of hope, and the Rev. Janet Maull-Martin of Prospect AME in Georgetown for an outstanding job serving as worship leader.  Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, a faithful supporter of our organization, delivered a personal message on the importance of love.  Special thanks to all of the other speakers who contributed to such a meaningful service.

We are grateful for our co-sponsors this year, the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, who assisted with all of the technical aspects of a virtual service, and the NAACP Lower Sussex Youth Council #2719, who coordinated a successful food drive to benefit the Milton Food Bank as our Day of Service activity.  And special thanks to the donors! Once again, the Cape Gazette published a full-page ad to commemorate the weekend.  We are so grateful for their continued support and for the support of all the businesses and organizations who contributed to the cost of the ad.

A special thank you to all who donated to our scholarship fund so far this year. Your support is always needed and appreciated in perpetuating and nurturing the legacy, the vision and the dream of Dr. King.  Donations to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization may be made to P.O Box 781, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Contributions will help fund scholarships for deserving youth in Sussex County and the ongoing work of the organization.  As we continue our efforts to make the Dream a Reality, we solicit your prayers and support to help us achieve our mission in 2021.

Thank You and God Bless!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization of Sussex County Inc.
