Eagles’ season ends in bizarre fashion

January 8, 2021

On Sunday night, the Philadelphia Eagles lost their last game of the season to the Washington Football Team 20-14 under very odd circumstances. In the fourth quarter, the team had a legitimate chance to win the game and knock Washington out of the playoffs. They were only trailing 17-14 when coach Doug Pedersen made the crazy decision to put in Nate Sudfeld, the third-string quarterback, despite Jalen Hurts running for two touchdowns earlier in the game. The part of this decision that makes no sense to me, is the fact that the Eagles did not announce anything about this quarterback possibility before the game started. Fans were definitely confused, but also the entire team was too when this happened. And to make matters worse, Nate did not play well and actually looked a little scared.

Since Pedersen made that odd decision, he is basically forcing himself to go deep in the playoffs next year or an even bigger possibility is that he’s probably going to get fired. I think Carson Wentz is going to be traded at some point this off season as well. The team needs to get better fast on the offensive line and cornerback positions or next year will be a bust too.

The NFL playoffs start on Saturday. I will be cheering for the Buffalo Bills to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. I think this is very possible. They have an explosive offense that may be just enough to keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC. Go Bills!

In college football, Alabama faces Ohio State next Monday for the National Championship. I hope it will be a close game. If it is, that might just be enough for me to stay up past halftime. Ohio State’s defense is going to have to play really well to contain Alabama's offense in order to have a chance to win. Both semifinal games were not very close, so I hope the championship game is much different. We could use a great football game to end this very odd season.

The 76ers have been quite impressive so far this season. They have the best record in the league at 7-1. They remind me of the Golden State Warriors teams in that they are scoring a ridiculous amount of points each game. Just this past Wednesday night, against the Washington Wizards, they scored 140 points to win! I don’t know if they can sustain this level of play for most of the season, but for now it sure is fun to watch.

Speaking of basketball, I have seen lots of old pictures on Facebook of the past Slam Dunk to the Beach tournaments from previous years. It's a real shame this event was an impossibility this year with the pandemic. I sincerely hope that the event can return to Lewes next year.
