Elizabeth ‘Liz’ or ‘Hon’ Burke, had impeccable taste

March 5, 2018

Elizabeth (Liz or Hon) Glacken Burke, 67, passed away Saturday,  March 3, 2018, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. She was born Oct. 17, 1950, in Freeport, N.Y.

Liz graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Brentwood, N.Y., and Marymount University in Arlington, Va.

Liz accompanied her husband of 48 years during his legal career in Washington, D.C., and in Fort Worth, Texas. As an executive spouse, her poise and grace provided inspiration and support to the young professional staff of a major American railroad. Liz's impeccable taste brightened the homes she furnished and decorated. She was also a highly accomplished and creative cook, who enjoyed providing outstanding fare for friends and family.

Liz was a founder and principal supporter of the popular Bethany Beach Breast Cancer Fun Run held in May of each year. Proceeds generated by the event support efforts to combat breast cancer, including mammograms for those otherwise unable to afford treatment.

Liz was a loving wife, mother, sibling, grandmother and friend whose warmth and sense of humor enriched the lives of all she encountered.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Glacken. She is survived by her husband, Edmund Burke; her two children, Edmund Burke III and Genie Burke; her grandchild, Thomas Edmund Burke; and siblings William Glacken, Gene Hodgens, Joan Walton, John Glacken; and a number of other relatives and close friends.

There will be a memorial later in the spring. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her final battle with cancer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to Tunnell Cancer Center C/O Bethany Area Realty, 778 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, DE 19930.
