Emma G. ‘Abby’ O’Brien, master sergeant

Emma G. “Abby” O’Brien, 76, of Georgetown passed away unexpectedly in her home Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018.

Abby was born in Rock, W.Va., daughter of the late John W. and Georgia (Williams) Hooker.

After a 23-year career in the U.S. Army, including the Women’s Army Corp, Abby retired with the rank of master sergeant. Her time in the Army took her to many places around the world.  MSgt. O’Brien received numerous Army decorations, medals and citations, but was most proud of the US Army Commendation Medal w/ 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service Medal.  After Abby and her husband’s retirement from the military, they settled in the Village of Cinderberry in Georgetown.

After moving to Cinderberry, Abby became very active in the community, especially the community hall.  She loved decorating the center for events, holidays and seasons, as well as, planning events and preparing print media for the community. 

Abby loved yard sales and making custom jewelry pieces.  Abby custom-made jewelry for every outfit, event, color and season.  She especially enjoyed giving her handmade pieces to friends and family.  Abby continually sought to do kind and thoughtful things for others.  

In addition to her parents, Abby is preceded in death by her husband, MSgt. Thomas R. O’Brien, U.S. Army, Retired; a sister, Emma Smith; and a brother, Tom Stanley Hooker.

She is survived by five siblings, Sue H. Barlow of Georgetown, John B. Hooker of Fenton, Mich., Jim A. Hooker of Concord, N.C., William M. Hooker and Bes Swetnam, both of Bluefield, W.Va.; as well as, twelve nieces and nephews, two grand-nieces and two grand-nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
