Enough is enough; say it loud and clear

September 17, 2021

A recent Cape Gazette edition contained yet again another listing of what DelDOT is doing for Sussex County.  While I have commented on DelDOT’s plan in the past, it’s worth noting that  traffic along  Route 24, from Angola Road  to Long Neck, is clogged nearly all the time now.  Can we say this is the new Forgotten Mile?  No, it’s four miles.  It takes me twice as long to get from Angola Road to Long Neck as it did a few years ago.  Soon it will take even longer as more and more people live along, and access, this stretch of road.  Actually, much of Route 24 is backed up a good deal of the time.

Yes, DelDOT is making improvements  in Sussex, but how can a major road that serves southern Sussex, that is an evacuation route no less, and is the target for every developer in town, be so neglected?  Why, because in part there is no DelDOT plan or funding to widen the Love Creek Bridge or widen Route 24 past it to Millsboro. And if you believe Route 24 will be widened from Mulberry Knoll to the bridge, then you will be disappointed in what is actually planned for that area.  Some improvements, yes, but not a complete dualization, no.  Intersections will be improved and that will help, but even DelDOT has stated the goal is safety, not improved flow of traffic from one intersection to the next.  So developers get what they want and we get Band-Aids. Just pray the next Ida doesn’t hit our coast. Do I blame those moving to our area? Absolutely not. Our county council and planning and zoning members  have allowed one development after another along a congested roadway without the infrastructure to support the influx of new homeowners.  Questionable  county land- use decisions are having the same effect all over eastern and southern Sussex; the next area to be neglected is western Sussex. So, enough is enough. Concerned citizens will come together Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 9:30 til noon at The Circle in Georgetown for a peaceful protest to voice our displeasure with those who say they listen to their constituents.  The council may be listening to some, but not to homeowners whose quality of life has been challenged.  Whose safety on the road is in question.  Whose concern for the environment is ignored.
