Explorium Emporium in need of home

Owners seek location for science educational center
January 17, 2019

Although a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the Explorium Emporium in November, its owners are still searching for a location for the science-focused educational center.

Owner Cari Miller wants a place with a farmhouse/laboratory feel. She says she needs a 4,000-square-foot space with at least 30 parking spots in the Rehoboth-Lewes area. After investigating several possibilities, she said the hunt keeps coming up short.

“It’s a lot to ask for this area,” she said. “We’d like it to be easy for locals to access year-round.”

Miller said the Explorium Emporium will be a place for kids and families to explore science, technology, engineering and math, known as STEM, through hands-on projects and experiments.

“We’ll offer weekend workshops and event rooms for parties to celebrate current and future scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians,” she said.

Children will be able to make a volcano, create a catapult, assemble an analog computer and even a cellphone. Projects will include building a DNA structure, robotics and owl-pellet dissection. Miller said while she is not a scientist, she hopes the emporium will foster children’s interest in the field.

“It’s important for the future to have kids interested in STEM careers,” Miller said.

Miller would like to partner with schools and homeschool providers to enrich their curriculums, and offer jobs to students in the teaching pathway as well as junior board of director seats to business pathway students.

But first, Miller said, she needs a location. In the meantime, she and husband David Stobie have been testing materials and projects and look forward to attending an upcoming toy festival in February for more ideas.

Miller said she welcomes tips from anyone who may have a possible location for the Explorium Emporium. Contact her at info@exploriumemporium.com, 301-758-0839 or go to e-squared.fun.
