Families in Sussex County who are navigating the challenges of a loved one's addiction are invited to participate in a free, in-person family recovery course.
The course is intended for parents or guardians whose child – regardless of age or current circumstances – has struggled with substance use.
Sessions will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays, Oct. 17, 24 and 31, at the Georgetown Public Library, 123 West Pine St., Georgetown.
The course is offered through Be a Part of the Conversation's partnership with the Delaware Rural Health Coalition, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening prevention, education and recovery support for First State families.
The three-part course is designed specifically for parents and guardians of individuals who have struggled with addiction to drugs or alcohol. Through peer-led discussion, practical education and evidence-informed tools, participants will gain a deeper understanding of addiction, its impact on the family, and strategies to support their own healing and recovery. The course was developed in collaboration with licensed clinicians working in addiction treatment and behavioral health and is led by trained facilitators with lived experience.
“Addiction impacts the entire family, yet family members are often left wondering where to turn for guidance and support. The family recovery course helps parents better understand addiction, recognize its impact on the family system, and begin their own recovery alongside others who truly understand what they're experiencing," said Kim Porter, CFRS, Be a Part of the Conversation executive director and co-founder.
Participants will learn about: addiction as a complex disease, its impact on the entire family, strategies for healthier relationships, and ways to build a long-term family plan.
“Families in Sussex County have been asking for more opportunities to connect with others who truly understand what they're experiencing. This course gives parents practical tools, trustworthy education and a supportive community so they don't have to navigate addiction alone," said Kathy Greeley, Delaware program manager.
Enrollment is limited to 12 participants. There is no cost to attend. Registration is required, and early sign-up is strongly encouraged.
