An early morning fire at a Rehoboth area condominium complex burned several units in the building Oct. 18.
The fire was reported at 1 a.m. at Beach Haven Condominiums in the 35000 block of Haven Drive off Route 1. Fire units from Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Indian River, Bethany Beach, Milton, Dagsboro, Millsboro, Millville, Ellendale and Slaughter Beach found several units on the 3rd and 2nd floors with fire
showing from the rear of the building, said Warren Jones, spokesman for the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Co. Occupants were exiting the building as firefighters arrived, officials said.
Firefighters battled the blaze for three hours to bring it under control; there were no injuries, Jones said.
The 18-unit building was evacuated and closed to tenants because of structural damage, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal. Chionchio said he did not know how many people were in the building at the time of the fire.
The Red Cross is assisting displaced occupants, Jones said.
Chionchio estimated damage could exceed $1 million. Investigators continue to search for the cause and origin of the fire, he said.
