Fire burns home in Dewey Beach

September 27, 2021

A home in north Dewey Beach burned Sept. 26, injuring a firefighter on the scene and causing $100,000 in damage.

Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Co. responded to the scene about 6 p.m. as smoke and fire were coming out of a single-story home on 119 Jersey St. Firefighters from Lewes and Bethany Beach also responded to the fire, which damaged the rear of the home, officials said.

The fire appeared to have started in a bedroom closet area, said Kent Swarts, spokesman for the Rehoboth fire company. The Office of the State Fire Marshal determined the fire was accidental and was caused by an electrical malfunction, said John Galaska, chief deputy state fire marshal.

One firefighter was injured and treated for a minor injury, Galaska. The one occupant of the home escaped without injury, he said.

Firefighters were on the scene for more than two hours. The fire caused about $100,000 in damage, Galaska said.
