First contribution received for Nov. 3 Veterans Trust Fund Dinner

August 19, 2018

Retired Air Force Col. George Chabbott used his return from a leave of absence from the Dover Capital City Rotary Club as an opportunity to reserve the first table at the Fifth Annual Veterans Trust Fund Dinner, set for Saturday, Nov. 3, at Dover Downs, with a $1,000 check.

Chabbott made the contribution at the Aug. 9 luncheon meeting of the club that meets weekly at Maple Dale Country Club, Dover.

The Veterans Trust Fund was signed into law in 2013 under the Commission of Veterans Affairs to provide a hand up to honorably discharged veterans in proven need. It is not part of the state budget, so revenue must come from contributions and fundraising events coordinated by the Friends of Delaware Veterans Inc. The Friends board members, all veterans and all volunteers, work with community groups, individuals and other donors to help their fellow veterans of all generations. Last year, more than $80,000 was approved for payment to prevent utility disconnections, evictions, and repossessions, make emergency repairs on homes and sometimes put food on the table.

“All of the money stays in Delaware, all of it goes to veterans, and contributions are tax deductible,” said Dave Skocik, Friends president. “We invite other businesses and individuals to support the men and women who serve and protect our state and nation. Military service runs in families. How we treat our veterans determines future recruitment."
