First Town Club of Lewes seeks new members

August 7, 2019

The First Town Club of Lewes began when four neighbor ladies started a local social club. It was an independent group, not affiliated with a larger organization. Their first meeting was Aug. 20, 1991. This club was open to all women, not just newcomers or Lewes residents. Organizers decided they would have speakers and interest groups, and give back to the community. Meetings were held monthly on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and yearly dues were $10.

The First Town Club of Lewes has given money from annual dues, which are now $20, to many organizations. In 2007, members decided to offer a scholarship to a graduating female senior at Cape Henlopen High School who would be pursuing further education. The scholarship fund is supported by dues, a 50/50 and a silent auction held in October.

Members have assisted Cape Henlopen Food Basket with food and monetary donations over the years. This year, they made felt poinsettia napkin rings for Harbor Healthcare of Lewes, adding a little surprise to the residents’ breakfast trays.

Many people from all walks of life have addressed meetings, including community advocators, artisans, musicians, and educational speakers from Delaware Humanities, local businesses, and health professions, as well as club members.

Club trips have ranged from a boat ride in Chesapeake City to visiting places like Easton, Winterthur, Longwood Gardens, Brandywine River Museum, casinos and more. In addition to monthly meetings, club members enjoy getting together for mah jongg, bridge, canasta, and the Creative Hands needlework group.

Through the years, the club has grown from 16 initial members to more than 100 at times. Ladies are from Lewes and surrounding areas. The club meets at 7 p.m., the third Tuesday of the month from September to April in the community room at the Lewes Historical Museum. December, February and May luncheons are held at various venues. New members are welcome; call Estelle at 302-645-7296 for more information.
