Football could take a hint from soccer

July 17, 2018

I am watching the final World Cup match Sunday morning - what a refreshing change seeing all the athletes, coaches and fans standing proudly and all singing their national anthem; most are very emotional. It is inspirational just watching this compared to our country of standing, kneeling, closed mouth or just picking their nose athletes - pride here!

I’ve been an American football fan all my life, had season tickets to Blue Hens and Eagles for many many years - not just a couch potato - I really went to the games. I know very little about soccer, but I am learning.

I am going to have a hard time adjusting back to our televised football with just 12 minutes of actual action in a 3.25-hour telecast, and the usual three or more defensive players jumping up and down and high-fiving each other after another very poorly thrown incomplete three-yard forward pass - and then we wait one minute for the next play.

Maybe I just like 90 minutes of continuous play with no commercial breaks like soccer. I will just have to get over the fact that the team I rooted for all year had only 13 players and coaches out of 90 or so who wanted to go to the White House to celebrate. Hey man, just give me my ring and check; who cares what country this is.
