Former Lewes mayor says farewell

May 27, 2022

Since first purchasing property in Lewes in 1979, I have been witness to the amazing transformation of this community.

With my first purchase of commercial property in 1986, I have been directly involved in the metamorphosis of our now-thriving historic business district. I have worked to ensure that our local businesses have brought a unique mix of independent shopkeepers who have been able to differentiate themselves from the chain stores in the surrounding area.

As our local businesses have evolved into a thriving business district, it has taken city officials, the chamber of commerce and store owners working together to create the community that is admired throughout the region.

Over the past 18 years, it has been an honor and privilege to work with fellow city officials, the chamber of commerce, business owners and residents to ensure that there is a balance that respects the history of the Lewes community and yet assures that we rise to meet the challenges of sea-level rise, resiliency and rampant development that is occurring both within the city and on surrounding lands.

As I conclude my eight years as mayor of this community, I urge members of the city government to respect the long-established core values of Lewes as they strive to ensure the future of this community.

It is a challenge that will require diligence and measured adjustments as well as extensive work with Sussex County and the state, but one that can be achieved.

I thank the Lewes community for affording me the honor and privilege to service this community for the past 18 years. I look forward to Lewes’ continued success.
