Fowler Beach nesting area in Prime Hook to reopen Aug. 29

August 22, 2020

The Fowler Beach area of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge that has been closed since March will reopen Saturday, Aug. 29.

The closure was for the benefit of federally and state-protected beach-nesting and migratory shorebirds, including red knots, piping plovers, oystercatchers, least terns and other species.

The refuge had another very successful season, fledging federally threatened piping plovers and least terns which are endangered in Delaware.

The beach nesting habitat will reopen for full use; visitors should note that all dogs must be leashed and Prime Hook is a carry-in, carry-out refuge for trash and recycling.
