Free children’s learning program to explore simple machines Aug. 17

Lightship Overfalls to host scavenger hunt during family fun event
August 12, 2022

The Overfalls Foundation will present a free, fun event where kids can learn about simple machines at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17, rain or shine, at the Lightship Overfalls in Lewes Canalfront Park.

This is a free event, and reservations are not required.

Levers, Pulleys and Wedges: Oh My! Simple Machines Making Work Easier on the Lightship Overfalls, presented by guest speaker Suzanne Ketchum, will help children learn about simple machines, and the impact they have on people’s daily lives and in operations at sea. Children will be introduced to the five basic simple machines – wheel and axle, pulley, lever, inclined plane, and screw – and how they are used in various settings. A scavenger hunt for these simple machines will occur on the Lightship Overfalls to conclude this family fun day event.

Ketchum is a certified teacher and retired educator with 35 years of classroom experience in New York state. She served for four years as an elementary school science curriculum coordinator and currently volunteers at the Lightship Overfalls and the Lewes library in addition to tutoring elementary-age children.
