Front Page Café event to explore state’s environment Jan. 17

Speaker is McKay Jenkins; UD professor, noted author, biodiversity expert
January 9, 2019

McKay Jenkins, founder of the environmental humanities program at the University of Delaware, will talk about the dangers facing the First State's biodiversity at the next Front Page Café event at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton. Dogfish Head craft beer and light fare will be served. Front Page Cafés always are free and open to the public, but because space is limited, registration is requested. To register, go to www.eventbrite.com.

In his 30 years of writing multiple books about the natural world, Jenkins has come to know not only Delaware’s beauty, but also the growing threats to its environmental heritage. He'll outline what protective steps can be taken, and discuss his latest project and how others can join him.

Jenkins is a national expert on the risks posed by toxic chemicals, water pollution and climate change. In “Food Fight: GMOs and the Future of the American Diet,” Jenkins examines the national debate over the safety, politics and environmental implications of genetic engineering and industrial food. Jenkins' “ContamiNation” investigates the synthetic chemicals that have become infused in people’s daily lives, and the growing body of evidence about the harm such chemicals can do to people’s bodies and the environment.

Jenkins, the UD Cornelius A. Tilghman Sr. Professor of English and a winner of the 2018 University Excellence in Teaching Award, regularly moves his students out of the classroom so they can observe and engage with the natural world.

This Front Page Café is co-sponsored by UD's Journalism Program, the Department of English and Delaware Humanities. For more information, go to bit.ly/dogfishfpc.
