As part of its continual effort to make a difference in the community in which it lives and serves, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Gallo Realty’s Gallo Gives Foundation awarded its 2019 first-quarter earning donations to the Delaware Humane Association, Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth, and the Beau Biden Foundation. In addition, a portion of earnings has been set aside for a college-bound senior scholarship that will be made available in the spring of 2020. The total donated this quarter was $5,750.
• $500 was presented to the Delaware Humane Association. The funds are specifically for the Wags, Whiskers, and Wine Event to be held Thursday, June 6, at Nassau Valley Vineyards. DHA is Delaware’s premier nonprofit, no-kill animal care and adoption center, serving a four-state area. It is committed to providing for the needs of homeless and owned dogs and cats in the community. Each year, hundreds of animals come to DHA in search of warm beds, good meals, and, most importantly, new homes.
The dedicated staff and volunteers work hard to ensure that each animal receives the best care possible during its stay at the adoption shelter. DHA serves the community by offering affordable spay/neuter services, low-cost vaccination clinics, and a pet-food pantry. It receives no government funding and relies on the support of the community in the form of volunteers and private donations. For more information, visit www.delawarehumane.org.
• $2,000 was awarded to Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth. MOWLR is a nonprofit organization that was first organized in 1970. In its first year, this program delivered 16,609 meals to those who were homebound. As client needs grew, the program expanded to include a holistic approach to providing services. The program grows at a rate of 3 to 6 percent per year in overall service, due to the advancing age of retirees and their increased susceptibility to life-threatening illnesses.
Currently, MOWLR has over 140 dedicated volunteers who make the distributions a reality. Each day, the volunteer drivers deliver two meals to each client on one of 15 routes in Sussex County (the largest in the state). For more about MOWLR, visit www.mealsonwheels-lr.org.
• $2,000 was donated to the Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children. The funds were allocated specifically for a foursome for the Sussex County Golf Invitational at The Peninsula Golf and Country Club. The Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children was established in June 2015 as an operating nonprofit to continue Beau Biden’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us, especially children who have fallen victim to abuse and neglect. The foundation believes that no child should be threatened by a predator - either an adult or a peer. The belief is that child abuse can be prevented through effectively educating adults and children, developing the next generation of child-welfare professionals, and strengthening child-protection laws around the country. For more on supporting Biden’s foundation, visit www.beaubidenfoundation.org.
The remaining first-quarter funds of $1,250 have been set aside to award two local graduating seniors with $2,500 scholarships to assist with their college tuition in the spring of 2020.
The Gallo Gives Foundation is funded through the company’s agents, management and owners. Agents are encouraged to donate a percentage of their commissions earned, and the firm matches all agent/staff contributions 100 percent. Public donations will be accepted as well. Each Gallo Realty office, in Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Bethany Beach, is represented by individuals who serve on the foundation’s giving committee. The committee researches community charities in need and recommends funding. The foundation is managed by the Greater Lewes Foundation.
