George Schultz will be missed by environmentalists

February 18, 2021

George Schultz died last week.  He was 100 years old and a distinguished Republican.  He served as a Marine and top government official, secretary of state and other jobs, under the Reagan and Bush presidencies.   He helped broker peace with Russia’s Mikhail Gorbachev and urged Reagan to address the hole in the ozone, a major environmental victory.

At 99, he was still producing papers urging attention on climate change. He was a proponent of putting a price on carbon, more specifically a carbon fee and dividend approach, which returns all the fees to citizens as a dividend. Thus, the plan is to be revenue neutral with no funds going to the government.  He served on the board of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, my organization, and provided wise counsel.

He will be missed, but his legacy will live on through those of us who continue to take action to save our climate.  Join us to rein in the continuing despoiling of our environment.
