Georgetown man sentenced to 67 years in jail

June 24, 2019

A Georgetown man will serve 67 years in prison after being found guilty of beating and raping a woman and killing a man with a hammer in October 2016.

Juan Tovar Cruz, 25, was sentenced in Delaware Superior Court June 21 on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree rape, endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree assault. Tovar Cruz took a guilty plea in January.

Police said in 2016, Tovar Cruz went to a house on Wilson Hill Road where he had recently started living. He threatened a woman who lived at the house, then tied her up with an electrical cord and raped her multiple times. The woman’s 2-year old daughter was present during the assault. The woman was able to escape and went to a neighbor’s house and called police.

When police arrived, they found the body of Ricardo Perez-Ramirez, 30, in the driveway. Perez-Ramirez had been beaten to death with a hammer.

In addition to prison time, Tovar Cruz was also sentenced to a year of home confinement and two years of probation.
