Georgetown teen dies in head-on crash on Route 9

January 1, 2022

A 17-year-old Georgetown boy died Jan. 1 in a two-car collision on Route 9 west of Hudson Road.

The crash happened at 7:55 a.m. when a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic driven by Ryan Carbajal, 17, was traveling westbound on Route 9, just west of the intersection at Hudson Road, and a 2018 Kia Optima sedan operated by a 30-year-old Lewes man was traveling eastbound in the same vicinity, said Sr. Cpl. Jason Hatchell of the Delaware State Police.

For unknown reasons, Hatchell said, Carbajal crossed over the continuous left-turn lane and into the eastbound lane directly into the path of the Kia, resulting in a head-on collision in the middle of the eastbound lane. After impact, he said, the Chevrolet came to rest in the continuous left-turn lane, facing west. The Kia rotated violently clockwise and slid off the roadway, coming to rest on the roadside, he said.

Carbajal was properly restrained, and was taken to Beebe Healthcare where he was pronounced dead, Hatchell said.

The 30-year-old was also properly restrained, and he was transported to Beebe Healthcare with serious injuries.

The roadway was closed for about three hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway was cleared.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this collision should contact Cpl/2 Ryan Albert with the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit at 302-703-3266, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or delaware.crimestoppers.com.
