Gordon Wells Reid, loved riding his bike

October 8, 2018

Gordon Wells Reid, 88, passed away surrounded by his family Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018.

Born in Beverly, Mass., Gordon spent his early years in Beverly and on Cape Cod with his father and mother, Thomas James and Alice Davenport Reid, and two older brothers, Abbott and David.  Gordon later met his wife Bernadette (Bernie) skiing at the Gray Rocks resort in Mt, Tremblant, Canada, and they were married for almost 54 years.

Gordon attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.  During his working years he was a Certified Safety Engineer and worked in insurance and later for several Roman Catholic archdioceses.

He and Bernie retired to Rehoboth Beach in 1994, and later built a home in Kings Creek Country Club in 1996, where they enjoyed golf and their friends in the community.  Until his retirement Gordon was an avid skier and ski patroller.  He also loved riding his bike, and was often seen biking around the circle in Kings Creek - most recently on his bright red trike.  For those who knew Gordon well, he also had a passion for hunting for golf balls, and had a serious affection for peanut butter.

Gordon was a co-founder of the Borrow-a-Bike program at Cape Henlopen State Park.  He was a member of St. Edmond Catholic Church through the years, and was on the buildings and grounds committee.  His true pride and joy in life was raising his daughters, Lesley and Laurie, with Bernie, and enjoying time with his three grandchildren, Lindsey, Reid and Allison.

Gordon was preceded in death by his brothers, Abbott Fraser and David Davenport Reid, as well as his parents.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Bernadette; his two daughters: Lesley R. Corydon (David) of Rehoboth Beach, and Laurie R. Bruner (David) of Voorhees, N.J.; and his grandchildren: Lindsey Marie Corydon, Reid Scott Bruner and Allison Grace Bruner.  Gordon was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, uncle and friend, and will be greatly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, at noon, at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, where friends may visit beginning at 11 a,m.  Interment will be private.  Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Gordon's memory to the Borrow-a-Bike program, c/o Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park, PO Box 132, Nassau, DE  19969.
