Gossett takes Kuhns to task for attacks

July 24, 2020

I find it unfortunate that Mayor Kuhns has gone so sour and negative in this campaign. His letters and remarks at candidate forums are mostly attacks on me and other candidates, which have no basis in fact.

Why is Paul so angry and defensive?

Paul presumes to know what is in my mind. Not only is he not clairvoyant, he is not listening. He has not listened to my campaign statements in the forums or read my campaign material. He has not even had a discussion with me about the issues facing the city in the coming years. He wants to tell you that I am tired of the visitors to our city, and that I “don’t care for what’s good for the city as a whole.” Anyone familiar with my record on the planning commission and the city commission knows that this characterization could not be further from the truth.

Paul, here is what I stand for: 1) Only when Rehoboth Beach is known as a safe and healthy destination will we have a healthy economy and recover from the economic effects of COVID-19. Our paramount concern must be ensuring the health and safety of our residents, business owners, employees and visitors. 2) We must manage our growth before it manages us. I have a record as a champion for preserving our sense of place and the essential character of Rehoboth Beach, but not at the expense of reasonable, well-thought-out economic growth. 3) We must protect our important natural assets - our beach, Boardwalk, lakes and trees - because they are at the center of what makes Rehoboth special. 4) We must restore citizen participation and open communication, conducting city meetings in the open, and welcoming citizen comment. 5) We must focus on fiscal responsibility and careful financial management, especially in our COVID-19 economy. In a time of reduced revenues, we must distinguish between needs and wants.

Paul, a respected U.S. senator once said, ‘‘You are entitled to your own opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts.” The next time you feel it necessary to make statements about how I feel, what I think, or what I care about, I suggest you talk to me and get the facts.

Patrick Gossett
former city commissioner
candidate for city commission
Rehoboth Beach
