On Sept. 9, donations piled in for Hurricane Dorian relief at the old terminal at Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown. Boxed donations have been stored in a hangar and are being transported to Lakeland, Fla., in a tractor-trailer donated by Delaware Technical Community College. In all, more than 7,600 pounds of donations – everything from diapers to batteries to tools to food and clothing – were collected.

Organizer Heather Chirtea, who lives near Milton, said she was motivated to spearhead the effort when she saw photos of the devastation suffered by parts of the Bahamas. Once the donations reach Florida, Chirtea said, they will be flown by private seaplanes to remote areas of the Bahamas where larger planes can't land.

Chirtea said thanks to Civil Air Patrol members and airport staff, the last of the donations were boxed up Sept. 10.

Donations can still be made. For a list of needed items, go to heathertour.com/dorian-relief.html.
