Happy hour for jewelry exhibition at Heidi Lowe Gallery set Aug. 24

August 18, 2018

Subtle Fictions, an exhibition featuring contemporary studio jewelry handmade by Alexandra Hopp and Lydia Martin, will open at Heidi Lowe Gallery Friday, Aug. 24, and an opening happy hour will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through Friday, Sept. 28.

As trained jewelers, both artists carefully consider how their materials and process bring to light details typically meant to be invisible in finished jewelry pieces. “It is the quiet beauty of Alex and Lydia’s work that draws me in, and the unexpected use of materials that holds my attention,” Lowe said.

Hopp builds her jewelry from pages of books, layer by layer. “My work deals with the similarities between the practices of the jeweler and obsessive-compulsive disorder sufferer – both engage in minute, repetitive actions and are preoccupied with infinitesimal details; the only difference is that in the case of the former, it’s considered a boon, but in the latter, a curse,” she said.

Martin also considers her role as a jeweler to the objects she creates. “There is a shadowed space between maker and made that is often meant to be invisible to both the trained and untrained eye,” she said. “I pay careful attention to my materials, manipulating silver in order to break it, then repair and reconstruct it. This shows the evidence of my own hand.”

Also on view at the gallery is Earrings Galore, an annual showcase of earrings that remains on display throughout the year. This year’s Earrings Galore show features more than 40 artists from across the country and abroad. Earrings range in size, shape, material and concept, from traditional to avant-garde.

Heidi Lowe Gallery offers silver ring-making classes from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday this summer. Jewelry-making classes are a fun way to be creative in a stress-free environment. The cost for class and materials is $100 per person, and class size is limited to six.

Heidi Lowe Gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 328 Rehoboth Ave. in Rehoboth Beach. For more information and to register for classes, go to www.heidilowejewelry.com.
