Happy trails and fast times for the Cape Henlopen cross country team

October 6, 2020

“Two-mile time trial” had a nice rhyme to it on a beautiful Friday afternoon on the campus of Cape Henlopen High School. The Cape cross country teams warmed up with a slow two-mile jog, then did some stretching before walking across Kings Highway at the traffic light. In less time than it takes to drive south then come back to Wawa North, Ryan Baker had picked up the Junction and Breakwater Trail and arrived at Wolfe Neck Road in 10:39. Lance Kauffman, Hunter Jones and Ethan Edery all broke 11 minutes.

Katie Kuhlman (13:25) and Ariana Adili-Khams (13:42) paced the girls’ troop of 10 runners.

“The trail system and state parks provide so many beautiful places for our athletes to run,” said coach Matt Lindell, last season’s Coach of the Year. “Share the trail seems to work, as we never have any problems sending out a pack of runners who run pretty fast.”

The Cape team will compete versus Caesar Rodney at Brecknock Park at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21.
