Harold C. Downs, retired custodian

Harold C. Downs, 86, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.

Harold was born in Harbeson, son of the late Silas and Lena (Wilson) Downs. He worked as a custodian with the Indian River School District, retiring several years ago. Harold was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, Harold is preceded in death by a daughter, Janis Downs; a son, Steven A. Downs; two brothers, Preston Downs, and his twin brother, Herman Downs; and two sisters, Margaret Walls and Marie Taylor.

He is survived by three daughters, Shirley Prettyman and husband Sam of Delmar, Kathy Moore and husband Gene of Laurel, and Lisa Walls and husband Jeff of Georgetown; eight grandsons, Steven Downs II, Andy Downs, Ryan Prettyman, Kyle Prettyman, Chase Prettyman, Jordan Walls, Tyler Johnson and Branden Morgan; two sisters, Edith Browning of Newark, and Shirley Hennesey of Lewes; his longtime companion, Dorothy Chorman; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 12, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, with visitation after noon. Burial will be in St. John's U.M. Cemetery, Georgetown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested in his memory to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
