Harry K Foundation donates to Cape Child Nutrition Services

November 14, 2018

The Harry K Foundation announced a donation to help Cape Henlopen School District students afford breakfast and lunch at school. The donation, which could amount to $25,000, will cover breakfast and lunch costs  for students who qualify to receive reduced-price meals during the 2018-19 school year.

The Harry K Foundation is a local organization whose mission is to make sure children in the community never go to bed hungry. It has established food pantries throughout Delaware and works directly with the Food Bank of Delaware to support school backpack programs. The foundation works to raise money and donates 100 percent of the proceeds to help alleviate food insecurity in the community.

In September, founder Harry Keswani reached out to Cheryle Lord-Gordon, Cape district Child Nutrition Services supervisor, to identify district areas of need. “I knew our biggest area of need would be students who qualified for our reduced meal program,” said Lord-Gordon. “School meals for both breakfast and lunch would cost a reduced student 70 cents per day. Recently, we identified that we have 206 students that completed the meal benefit form and fall into this category. From there, we did the math with Keswani, and he graciously agreed to donate enough money to cover the breakfasts and lunches for these 206 students. The foundation has also agreed to help additional students that may be identified later in the school year.”

In late October, Cape district families who qualified for reduced-price meals received a letter from Child Nutrition Services informing them of the Harry K Foundation donation.

“We are very appreciative of the generosity that the Harry K Foundation has showed our district,” said district Superintendent Bob Fulton. “We recognize that the only meals some students may receive are the meals the school provides, so it’s imperative that none of our students leave hungry. Thanks to the Harry K Foundation for helping to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
