Harvey C. ‘Boopie’ Morris, skilled craftsman

June 16, 2021

Harvey C. Morris, “Boopie,” 77, of Lewes, son of Thelma Hazel and Winston W. Morris, was born March 15, 1944, in Lewes. He passed at his home surrounded by his family Friday, June 11, 2021. He attended Rabbit’s Ferry Elementary School, William C. Jason Comprehensive High School, graduating from James H. Groves High School.

Harvey was a skilled craftsman who loved working with his hands. Most of his masonry work can be seen throughout Sussex County and beyond.  In his garage can be viewed his restored workmanship of his favorite collections. Each project was entered with exactness, no matter how large or small. With his keen knowledge and patience, he could do anything: Imagine it, visualize it, and gather all materials to work toward the finished project. He loved helping others, whether through information or his skills. He could always be a good resource for reasoning.

Harvey enjoyed warm weather and being outside; no summer temperature bothered him. He could be found reading his newspaper at 6 a.m., either in his green work truck or sitting in front of his “Ford Country” garage. Breakfast was his favorite meal - pancakes were made year round!  And late-night snacks included Cheetos or Breyer’s Natural Vanilla ice cream, which he shared with all his grandchildren.

He was a dedicated member of Israel U.M. Church in Lewes where he served as chairman of the administrative council for approximately 20 years. He was also a longstanding trustee and member of both the lsrael Young Adult and Men’s Choir. Until recently, he was the groundskeeper of both the Israel Parsonage and cemetery properties.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Elda Wright, Winston T. Morris, Janet Watson and Martin Wayne Morris. He leaves to survive him his wife, Carolyn A. Morris of nearly 55 years; children, Deborah (Michael) Taylor and H. Quentin Morris; and sister, Merle Ann Morris; his grandchildren; Desiree Morris, Jasmine Morris, Mikayla Taylor, Lamond Morris, Danielle Morris and Harvey Quentin Jaden Morris. His in-laws include Norman Watson, Marian Harmon, Shirley A. Street, Vernon (Betty) Streett, Joyce Shockley, Melvyn (Kathy) Streett, Patricia (Jerry) Maull and Anthony (Jacalyn) Streett; and a host of nieces and nephews, to include five godchildren.

We will miss his morning breakfast prayer, where everyone was included. Some named, but all prayed for - “in Jesus name.” He loved the Lord, and read his daily devotions, commenting on them throughout the day. Harvey lived a quiet and faith-filled life. Celebration of life service will be held at St. John 2nd Baptist Church, 22602 Mt.Joy Road, Millsboro, Sunday, June 20, at 3 p.m .  Family and friends may visit two hours prior to service.
