Hazel T. Allan, dedicated wife and mother

March 30, 2021

Hazel T. Allan went to be with the Lord Friday, March 26, 2021. She was 89 years old and a resident of Brandywine Seaside in Rehoboth Beach. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 69 years, William.

Born in Yonkers, N.Y., to the late Harry Strain and Anna (Maleska) Strain, she was the loving mother of Barbara Gipe, William (Jeanne), Michael (Lauren), Richard, Patricia Casarella (Dan) and her late son James. She had eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Estvanik of Enfield, Conn., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sisters Winifred Held, Alice Porach and Connie Pondiccio; and her brothers Joseph Gallo, Harry Strain and Robert Strain.

Mrs. Allan graduated from Commerce High School in Yonkers. She worked as a beautician and a PX clerk at Fort Riley, Kan., until becoming a mother. She was a dedicated wife and mother who lived for over 60 years in her home in Elmsford, N.Y.

Hazel was a baker extraordinaire known for her birthday and holiday cakes, and especially the gingerbread houses she baked and decorated annually for the enjoyment of her children and grandchildren. Hazel was very active in her parish church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Elmsford, where she served as a past president of the Mothers’ Guild and led fundraisers too numerous to count.

The family would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff of Brandywine Seaside for the excellent care they gave to our parents.

A wake will be held Monday, April 5, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Ballard Durand Funeral Home in Elmsford.  A funeral Mass will be Tuesday, April 6, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Donations can be made in her memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, 59 East Main St., Elmsford, NY 10523.
