Helen Dougherty Miller of Lewes passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, one week after her 98th birthday.
Born in Wilmington Sept. 19, 1928, Helen was a devout Roman Catholic. She received her undergraduate and master's degrees from University of Delaware.
Most of her time on this earth was happily spent with her husband Robert Raymond “Bib” Miller. Together they raised five children while living in Wilmington and Martinsville, Va. Helen’s career as a librarian was something she took great pride in. Her former students fondly remembered her as tough but fair, intelligent and incredibly witty. Helen was also a very talented seamstress. Each creative project that she took on was humbly and beautifully completed to the finish.
During their retirement years, Helen and Bib moved to Rehoboth Beach, where they spent time with friends and received visits from children and grandchildren eager to see them. Helen and Bib traveled during these years as well, visiting sights in and out of the country, reading books, playing cards, spending time on the beach and quickly making friends wherever they went. After Bib’s passing, Helen carried on her role as the beloved matriarch of the Miller family. She spent many years volunteering for St. Edmond Catholic Church, traveling, continuing her crafts, and visiting with her children and grandchildren. Helen Miller was always the epitome of class, humility, wittiness, and grace. She will be forever loved and missed by all of those who were lucky enough to have her in their lives.
She is survived by her children, Robert Raymond Miller Jr. (Sally), Richard Michael Miller (Cheryl), David Brian Miller (Pamela) and Barbara Miller Pfersich (Jack); her grandchildren, Robert Brandon Miller, Sarah Miller Warren (Hank), Lauren Wadad Miller and David Brian Miller Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Prescott “Scottie” Warren and Lowery Anne Warren.
She will be reunited with the faithful departed before her: Robert Raymond Miller (husband), Jean Dougherty Cates (sister), Thomas Charles Miller (son), and Alec Miller (grandson).
The family would like to recognize her devoted friend, Denise DiSabatino Allen, whose friendship and support meant so much throughout her life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6, at St. Edmond Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach. Burial will follow the services at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach.

“If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss." – Anne Lindgren Davison
