Helen Dorian Sheppard, enjoyed going to KSI

August 4, 2020

Helen Dorian Sheppard, 58, of Lewes was born Jan. 24, 1962, to Roland and Sadie Sheppard in Lewes.  Helen was the sixth child born of that union.

Helen was born with down syndrome and only given four years to live. Thank God for Jesus because as of Jan. 24 of this  year Helen turned 58 years old.  Helen was a very happy person. She loved everybody and she called everybody her friend.  A little over a year ago Helen was diagnosed with dementia which seemed to progress rapidly throughout the years.  After spending a few weeks in the hospital, she came home Thursday, July 23, 2020, and passed peacefully Friday, July 24, 2020, at 12:35 p.m. at home with her sister (Elaine), aunt (Estelle), and the nurse.  She just went to sleep.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, several brothers and sisters, and also by her foster parents, Willis and Rosa Harmon.  Helen spent over 30 years with them after the death of her mother; (Sadie) and her aunt (Alice). Helen was a very independent person.  She could clean a house, make her bed, wash dishes, feed and dress herself, help with laundry and do other chores.  She loved church, and loved singing.  She loved playing the tambourine and calling on Jesus.  One of her favorite songs was “Jesus Got A Hold Of My Life, and He Won't Let It Go.” She loved singing “Break Every Chain” with Minister Spencer.

Helen attended Howard T. Ennis School in Georgetown, where she received her certificate of completion; after that she started working at K.S.I. Milford.  She worked there for over 30 years.  Helen also worked at Burger King, the Harrison House, P&G and a few other places.  She loved going to KSI and working at Burger King.  Recently Helen had started going to Chimes in Millsboro, where she was known as the "social butterfly."
Left to cherish Helen's beautiful memories are her four brothers, Roland Sheppard of Jacksonville, Ark., John Sheppard of Marietta, Ga., Ricky Sheppard of Millsboro and Robert Collins of Pennsylvania; four sisters, Joyce (Victor) Floyd, of Worton, Md., Elaine Sheppard of Lewes, Doris Gaines of Salisbury, Md., and Rozalind Collins of Maryland; two stepsisters, Takisha Tunnell of Georgetown, and Shawna Cephas of Ellendale, and siblings; one uncle Calvin (Estelle) Butler of Milton; and one aunt, Geneva Felton of Chestertown, Md.; and foster brother, Jerome Woods.  She also leaves a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and her church family and a host of other from her days of working, and different Day Programs she attended. Helen will truly be missed by many.

Celebration life service will be held Saturday Aug. 8, at 11 a.m., at St John 2nd Baptist Church, 26602 Mt. Joy Road Millsboro. Family and friends may visit two hours prior to service.
