Helen Marie Truitt, always active

Helen Marie Truitt, 84, passed away at home with her family Friday, Feb. 26, 2021. Born in Ocean View Dec. 21, 1936, Helen was the daughter of the late “Gus” and Anna Mitchell.

She was the wife of Arthur Truitt and passed away on their 65th wedding anniversary. She was a graduate of John M. Clayton High School and attended Milford School of Nursing. She retired from the state of Delaware as coordinator of the Edward Pyle Service Center in Roxana in 1991. Helen was always active, playing women’s softball, being a Girl Scout leader, taking youth on mission trips as part of the Appalachia Service Project, and camping with her family and friends. She made wedding cakes for members of the family and the Sussex County community. She was a member of Carey’s Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and served on various committees. She was also a member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary. 

In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by her daughter: Bonnie VanBuskirk (Florida), three grandchildren: Joshua (California), Chelsea (England), and Brianna VanBuskirk (Maryland); two sisters: Francis Fisher (John) and Wilma Graham (Bruce). She was predeceased by her daughter: Cindy Robinson, son-in law: Manaen Robinson, sister: Elma Leedom, and brothers: Willard, Eldon, Floyd and Howard Mitchell. 

A funeral service and celebration of life will be held at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, Wednesday, March 3. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,to visit with family. Services begin at 1 p.m., officiated by Pastor Leza Smack. Interment will be at Carey’s Cemetery immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Carey’s Methodist Church c/o Josephine Dorey, 22750 Carey’s Camp Road, Millsboro, DE 19966. Masks and social distancing are required as per COVID guidelines.
