Henlopen Conference rocks the house in Division I hockey playoffs

Cape, Polytech, Dover, Sussex Tech all reach semifinals

Henlopen Conference field hockey went zamboni on the rest of the field Nov. 9 in the quarterfinal round of the Division I state field hockey tournament, as Cape, Polytech, Dover and Sussex Tech were all winners.

Cape beat St. Georges 7-0, Polytech dominated Appoquinimink 7-1, Dover rolled over Concord 2-0 and Sussex Tech upset top-ranked Padua 1-0.

The semifinal games are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 14, at DE Turf north of Milford. Sussex Tech and Dover will battle for a spot in the finals at 5:30 p.m., while Cape will play Polytech shortly after, about 7 p.m.

The fillies from Cape left the stable at full speed versus St. Georges. The Vikings play best on a fast track, and they stampeded the entire game, getting shots and corners and converting goals from a handful of players.

Cape outshot St. Georges 25-0 for their 13th straight win on the season, which included a season-ending 3-1 victory over Polytech in which they outshot the Panthers 35-1.

Polytech dominated Appoquinimink 6-1 with an 18-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Dover bested Concord 2-0 in a defensive game, where the shots were 6-1 in favor of Dover.

Sussex Tech, backed by Grace Lee in goal, blanked top-seeded Padua 1-0.

Scoring for Cape against the Hawks were Annie Judge and Alia Marshall with two goals each and Cam Smith, Ryleigh Elliott and Anna Stancofski with one apiece. Judge, Marshall and Amanda Sponaugle each garnered an assist.

The final four lowdown on the breakdown shows Cape beating Polytech and Sussex Tech during the regular season but losing to Dover in the first game of the year. Sussex Tech beat Dover and Polytech in the regular season, but lost to Cape. Polytech beat Dover, but lost to Sussex Tech and Cape. Dover beat Cape, but lost to Sussex Tech and Polytech.
