Herring Point 5K and 10K course redesigned due to flooded trail

Family and friends love small-race atmosphere
October 17, 2019

The sixth annual Herring Point 5K and 10K Classic Oct. 13 at Cape Henlopen State Park had a late course correction because abnormally high tides over the previous three days had washed out the southbound trails.

“A few people complained it wasn’t the race course they signed up for,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “We were lucky to get the new course approved and certified at the last minute.”

The 5K race had 40 runners, as Aydan Vanderwende, 15, won his very first event in 20:52. Troy Julian, 17, hounded Aydan to the finish line but just couldn’t get there, running 21:06. Emily Trout, 16, was third overall and first woman in 21:18.

Richard Julian was male masters winner in 22:57. Shelly Murray won the female masters title in 26:50.

“I think most of the faster runners chose the 10K race,” Aydan said with a smile. “My parents will be disappointed they weren’t at the finish to see me win.”

The 10K race had 62 runners and was won by Mike Marciano in 38:55. He was followed by Mike Sewell in 42:10, Paul Riermaier in 43:22, Matt Lindell in 43:26 and Bobby Hutton in 43:40.

Jen Cawthern was women’s 10K winner in 45:47, followed by Natalie Quigley in 46:23, Jackie Quigley in 48:09, Jen Perry in 50:08 and Teresa Moody in 51:27.

The next Seashore Striders event in the 18th Mariner’s Bethel 7-Miler/5K Trail Run at Camp Barnes Sunday, Oct. 20. Race starts at 1 p.m.
