High-flying fun is off the schedule this Good Friday

Great Kite Festival grounded by state park paving project
February 26, 2023

The 55th annual Great Delaware Kite Festival, co-sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation, will not take place this Good Friday, April 7. The festival is staged on Cape Henlopen State Park’s parade field, with thousands of people attending annually. Most of the attendees arrive by vehicle, and they are parked at the bathhouse lot. That parking lot will be closed until the end of May for a repaving project as part of several planned infrastructure upgrades at the state park.

Event organizers looked at numerous options to possibly stage a scaled-back festival, but none of them were feasible due to safety concerns related to the inability to provide adequate parking.

“We are very disappointed that we cannot stage the Kite Festival this year, but our organizing committee is already planning for next year’s event,” said Betsy Reamer, Lewes Chamber of Commerce executive director. “Mark those calendars for March 29, 2024!”
