High school football tournament moves to semifinal weekend

Central at Dover and Delmar at Woodbridge highlight Black Friday

Dover football will host Sussex Central at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 23, to see which Henlopen Conference team moves to the Division I state championship game the following weekend at the University of Delaware. Friday’s winner will face the survivor of the Saturday, Nov. 24, 11 a.m. tilt featuring Salesianum at Hodgson.

Sussex Central lost the opening game of the season 21-0 at Hodgson, then ran off 10 straight victories, including a 21-0 home shutout of Dover on Sept. 28. Sussex Central shut out seven opponents over its last 10 games.

The Senators finished 9-1 and scored more than 40 points in eight of those wins. They also had a 35-21 home win over Division II powerhouse Woodbridge.

Woodbridge will host Delmar at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 23, in a D II semifinal game. The winner will play Saturday’s winner between Tower Hill and Wilmington Friends, which will be played at Caravel at 2 p.m.

Woodbridge beat Delmar by a score of 25-0 on Nov. 9. It was the Wildcats’ only loss of the season.

Woodbridge lost to Dover 35-21 and Wilmington Friends 24-21 early in the season before winning eight straight games to reach the semifinals.
