Phillies starting pitcher Cristopher Sanchez just set the franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings with 44.2 going back to April 27. In other words, his ERA in May was 0.00 and his streak is still going on. Previously, the Phillies' record was held by Grover Cleveland Alexander, set in 1911 with 41.2 innings. Cristopher has a long way to go to get the Major League Baseball record, which is 59.2 by Orel Hershiser in 1988 while pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who also won the World Series that year.
Overall, the Phillies continued their incredibly inconsistent play in the span of a week. They can play absolutely horrible baseball in one series, barely scoring any runs, and then go on a supposedly difficult road trip and sweep three from the west division, second-place San Diego Padres. Now they will play three with the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in LA. Let's hope they stay hot with the bats.
The month of June is going to be very busy sports wise. The NBA finals will start June 3, which is quite early for them. I think they scheduled this intentionally so it wouldn’t conflict with the World Cup soccer tournament. I am very much looking forward to watching, even though the U.S. team has not been very impressive in warmup games. I expect them to get out of their group to the knockout stage, but any progress past that will be a bonus, that’s for sure.
The French Open tennis tournament has started and will end in the second week of June as well. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain unfortunately was not able to play because of a wrist injury and he is also out for Wimbledon in July. Yannik Sinner of Italy lost in the third round, so the men’s draw is wide open. Coco Gauff is doing well on the women’s side. I will report in more detail next week.
Last, but not least, good luck to both the boys' and girls' Cape high school lacrosse teams for making the state finals. They both rolled over all their opponents in the playoffs. Go Vikings!
