In honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary, several Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs properties is hosting programs that complement statewide celebrations by capturing pivotal moments in history.
In Sussex County, the Zwaanendael Museum will present Walk to DeBraak, from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, June 4, at Cape Henlopen State Park,15099 Cape Henlopen Drive, Lewes.
Guided by Zwaanendael staff, participants will take a short walk (0.3 miles) to explore the history, artifacts and surviving hull section of the 18th century shipwreck HMS DeBraak and learn about its crew. In a terrible squall May 25, 1798, the ship sank off the shores of Cape Henlopen in 90 feet of water.
The tour lasts 45-60 minutes. Ages 10 and up are welcome. Space is limited to 18. Comfortable footwear is required. Prior registration is strongly encouraged to ensure a spot. Walk-ins are welcome space permitting.
