Hockey 4 Haxton makes annual fun at Mariner

December 25, 2019

The annual Hockey 4 Haxton Scholarship Indoor Tournament took place at Mariner Middle School Dec. 21-22, when eight adult teams and four U19 teams fought it out for bragging rights.

The adult teams played Saturday, while the U19 squads played Sunday.

“I thought the tournament went great,” said co-director Stephanie Irwin Brown. “Everyone pitched in during the weekend. Great hockey was played, and friends enjoyed catching up with each other on and off the court. A lot of great ideas for next year came up, and as always, we thank our community for supporting Hockey 4 Haxton every year.”

“I think Haxton was just as fun as always,” said Cape senior Anna Stancofski. “I played in both the adult pool and the U19 pool. It was great to play some competitive, but fun field hockey for such a great cause! I think everyone had a good time.”

The two-day event raises funds for Easter Seals and the annual Haxton scholarship that benefits current Delaware Shore Field Hockey senior members in memory of Amanda Haxton.

Haxton was a member of Delaware Shore Field Hockey before passing away as a result of injuries from an automobile accident. She first played with Delaware Shore in 2001. She also played her high school field hockey at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. Delaware Shore has been honoring Haxton with an indoor hockey tournament since the accident in 2007. This event has benefited the Georgetown Chapter of Easter Seals, where Amanda spent time in rehabilitation before her passing.

Delaware Shore Executive Director Mike Eisenhour presented Cape seniors Marlee Geppert and Abby Kane the annual Hockey 4 Haxton scholarships.

“I love playing in the Hockey 4 Haxton Tournament,” said Kane. “It gives me a chance to play with my friends that don’t play field hockey. I also get a chance to have fun competing against other teams too. I am extremely grateful to receive the Hockey for Haxton scholarship. My plan is to study sports management at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina.”
