Baseball:
This past weekend, the Philadelphia Phillies had a great alumni celebration for their fans along with a sweep of their series with the Florida Marlins. The ceremonies featured the 2008 Champions' 10 year reunion celebration. Many of the star players from that team were there. It was great fun to watch baseball, with the memories I have from that, and to see the Phillies get a sweep.
In terms of this season though, the Phillies have to continue consistently winning games. The Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves are still in the hunt for the division championship. The Nationals have underachieved so far this season. They are currently six games back from the Phillies and I expect them to make a run for the division at some point. The Braves are a young team like the Phillies. So they are not as worrisome as the Nationals.
Golf:
In golf this week, the 100th PGA Championship is being played in St. Louis, Missouri at the Bellerive Country Club. The PGA tour has not played a competitive tournament there for 10 years, so only 13 players in the field have actually played the course for this type of event. They received over 1 inch of rain earlier this week, so the long hitters like Jason Day or Dustin Johnson should do well with wide fairways that will hold a ball from rolling into the rough.
This will be the last year that the PGA Championship is played as the last major of the season. This tournament will be moved back to May for next year. For now on, the British Open will be the last major in July. This is good for golf.
Football:
The Philadelphia Eagles are playing the Pittsburgh Steelers for their first preseason game this week. Nick Foles has injured his shoulder, and Carson Wentz is not ready for prime time yet, so the press has been having a hayday with speculations. The Eagles' third string quarterback, Nate Sudfeld, is starting the game. I sure hope that no other setbacks happen concerning the quarterback position. It would not be good news for the hopes of another good season, let alone another chance for making it to the Super Bowl.
