Horizon Philanthropic tops $100 million in assets raised

February 3, 2019

Since 2002, Horizon Philanthropic Services has created and managed capital campaigns for 32 nonprofit clients, primarily in southern Delaware.

The firm celebrated a milestone of $100,517,550 in funds raised as of Jan. 22, to support the construction of parks, libraries, youth organizations, museums, senior centers, animal rescue facilities and more.

During that time, Horizon has worked with another 20 clients on projects ranging from establishing new nonprofits and foundations to creating development and strategic plans, and conducting site evaluations.

In 2018, Horizon spun off a new company, Horizon Construction Services, to give its clients access to cost-effective project management for new construction and remodeling efforts in the $1 to $10 million range. HCS is currently beginning its seventh building project, a new regional charter school.

Horizon also provides nonprofit management services for several clients, including the Greater Lewes Foundation.

The principal of Horizon Philanthropic is Michael J. Rawl, who brings more than 20 years of foundation management experience to his role. Mark Chura is the project supervisor for Horizon Construction Services.

Working from offices in Lewes, Horizon relies on a staff of eight employees and consultants to address a wide range of nonprofit needs including campaigns, research, recruitment, communications, graphic design and events management.

Horizon’s reputation for high-quality, cost-effective services is important to Rawl, who notes the firm has not solicited a new client over its 17 years; rather, 100 percent of Horizon’s business comes via referrals and word of mouth.

Projects with which Horizon is currently working include fund development and construction for the new Sussex Montessori School in Seaford and for the Lewes Senior Activity Center. Horizon is also managing campaigns for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes and the new Grove Point Junction docking station in Rehoboth Beach.
