When I read the article about the proposed 127 homes to be built at the Black Oak project on New Road, I could not believe it. It was just last Friday that there was a letter saying enough is enough about the overbuilding in Lewes. To even consider this is unimaginable to me. New Road is a two-lane country road with a small-circumference roundabout on it that currently has almost 500 houses under construction using it to get in and out. New Road will not handle this additional traffic plus bikers and walkers. New Jersey is taking out roundabouts because they do not work and Delaware, in its infinite wisdom, is adding them. Go figure.
Sussex County Council needs to stop and think about the current overpopulation and the stress on roads, fire/ambulance and police, not to mention sewer, water and electricity. If there is indeed an emergency, how are the current residents going to be evacuated? They also need to locate housing on the western side of Route 1, not the beach side.
To support the current housing needs of affordable housing, tiny houses and even dorm-type structures should be the priority. Phillip’s Seafood, when it was in Ocean City, Md., had dorms for its employees even back in the 1960s, and Funland currently has dorms for some of its employees.
The housing focus needs to change immediately to what is needed and away from greed.
