Hugo Dirks, retired foreman

Hugo Dirks, 82, of Newark, passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, after a long illness. Born and raised in Lewes, he attended Lewes schools until he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1957. While in the Coast Guard, his tour of duty included serving aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Spencer and being stationed at Indian River Inlet Coast Guard Station.  Upon his discharge from the Coast Guard after serving five years, he was a sometime member of the Spencer Association, as he also was a past member of American Legion Post 10 of Newark and a current member of American Legion Post 25 of Middletown.

Upon returning to Lewes after his discharge, he was employed by DelDOT as a surveyor and transferred to New Castle County in 1964. In 1965, he worked for Delaware Roads Construction Company, and later, Eastern States Construction Company and then James Julian Construction Company. In 1969, he suffered a near fatal illness, and after recovery, worked for Avisun Corp. in New Castle. He left there several years later and then he went to work for Greggo & Ferrara Construction Company and stayed for 28 years as a foreman until his retirement in 2001.

Hugo is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife Jessica; son Richard of Newark, son Ryan and his companion Lauren Brown of Elkton, Md.; daughter Rita Conde of North Wilmington; grandson Michael Conde; granddaughters Stephanie Dirks, Meghan Dirks, Madison Dirks and Natalie Conde; brother Pete Dirks of Lewes; and sister Clara Ebert of Norfolk, Va., as well as many nieces and nephews and his canine companion Maisy.

Hugo was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Lilley (Hughey) Dirks; brothers Michael, Timothy and Thomas; sisters Rena Johnson and Isabella Mayfield; and a grandson, Logan Dirks.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of the third-floor ICU at St. Francis Hospital, who provided Hugo with such extraordinary care during his final days.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Hwy., Newark, Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Hugo’s memory to Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder (Aetna Emergency Ambulance Service), P.O.
