If you’re planning to demolish a home: wait

October 4, 2019

As the Cape Gazette recently noted, demolition season is beginning again in Rehoboth. If you’re looking to demolish a house and want to do some good in the process, check into Details Deconstruction (Details.org), a nonprofit out of Baltimore offering a cost-efficient, green alternative to demolition that, at the same time, does social good.

My husband and I used them back in 2017 to take down our 1940s Rehoboth Beach house in preparation for our new build. It was a wonderful experience.

Instead of putting all the debris from our house into a landfill, Details carefully deconstructed our home, board by board, and donated all the reusable materials, at our choice, to Sussex County Habitat for Humanity.

In the process, Details creates jobs while building a skilled workforce among folks who face employment challenges. Their employees are carefully chosen, trained and supervised. On site, they were efficient, professional, and respectful of our neighbors throughout the demolition process. The Details team also coordinated with our builder in order to ensure a smooth interface.

Every situation is unique, but there are also possible tax advantages associated with the donation of reusable materials. You would need to talk with your tax counselor to see if they would work for you.
